Joanna has always spoken her mind. When she unexpectedly becomes Queen, her father and husband are determined to silence her. She went down in history as Joanna the Mad – what if she wasn't insane, but furious? SIX meets Sondheim in this dark saga inspired by Catherine of Aragon's older sister. Featuring Locked Away, Stiles & Drewe Best New Song Prize finalist 2024.
Do we really need another musical about ‘female power from the regency era because all the men in her life were twats?’ I mean, there's nothing wrong with it, but probably not.
With shows like Six, Fantastically Great Women, and even the new production of Anne Boleyn already succeeding in the industry, ‘The Queen is Mad’ doesn't feel particularly out of the box or original.
Unfortunately, it was also performed by a cast who struggled to execute what is actually quite a demanding score. These songs seemed to be cut versions of their full length potentials, and were the most impressive aspect of the show.
