No Higher Purpose
Rating: ★★
Venue: Studio at Paradise in Augustines, Edinburgh
Speckle cannot shake the feeling that something is not right. Could it be that chickens are not, in fact, all-powerful gods, as she has been led to believe? We watch as a group of young people, raised their entire life on the remote chicken farm Poultrion, begin to question their wacky way of life. But with Reverend Rooster's iron fist ruling over the farm, can Speckle and the others find the answers they are looking for, and perhaps even a higher purpose in their lives?
If you saw and enjoyed The Emu War at the Fringe last year then this story might be up your street. If not, perhaps look elsewhere!
Many of the performers sounded as though they had recently lost their voice, and the microphone quality unfortunately didn't help. The actor playing our antagonist Reverend Rooster was frequently too quiet to hear, despite having what could have been a very camp villain type character.
The songs were altogether too slow, although some of the lyrics were funny, and not particularly musical - more spoken to a track.
The cast has clearly worked hard for this piece and it seemed well rehearsed and directed, but the overall production does not fully reflect this.
