Nerds: The Bill Gates vs. Steve Jobs Comedy Musical
Rating: ★★★★★
Venue: Cowbarn at Underbelly, Edinburgh

If South Park and the IT Crowd had an affair, Nerds would be the unapologetic lovechild they put up for adoption to avoid a scandal. Fast, funny and full of shit wit, experience the possibly doobie-induced highs and self-deprecating lows of tech titans Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as they face off in epic rap battles, ill-advised schemes and hilarious songs. Get your lightsabers at the ready for this laugh-out-loud musical comedy.

Watching Kane Oliver Parry go from playing a role like the Escapologist in Matilda on the West End to to a cheesy Steve Jobs at The Fringe is quite a jump - but he does a wonderful JOB of showcasing his incredible talent at every level.

This musical is very Operation Mincemeat on a basic scale; it's funny, fast and definitely entertaining. But seeing what are relatively large-scale set and costumes for a show of this calibre does pose the question: have they spent all their time and budget on the visual aspects which is why the script and score are so simple?

Regardless of the answer, neither are issue enough to detract from the overall enjoyment of the piece. Perhaps in the hands of a more ambitious production company this show would reach its full potential as this run has left the GATES wide open for a future life.
