HOT MESS | REVIEW

Hot Mess
Venue: The Lion & Unicorn Theatre
Cast: Georgia Polly-Taylor

Glamour collides with gut-wrenching reality in this outrageous 'comedy-burlesque-grotesque'. Physical and full on, 'HOT MESS' tears down the velvet curtain between high fashion and the human experience as wanna-be socialite Hot Mess struts, cries and flushes her way through the 2025 Met Gala.

Through scandalous skits, a semi-dazzling bit of burlesque, and unflinchingly honest comedy, this genre-blending show celebrates the often disastrous reality of being human. A fusion of high fashion, absurd comedy, and bathroom panic, this show promises to bring glitter, glamour, and a healthy dose of the unexpected to the stage.

Fringe in all it's splendour.

In a 50 minute space, Georgia Polly-Taylor manages to fit every genre of late-night fringe show you could possibly imagine. There's clown, there's stand-up, there's audience participation, there is partial nudity, there is social commentary, and there is confusion. A lot of confusion.

Hot Mess is messy, but intentionally so. We are introduced to aspiring fashionista Hot Mess on the eve of her debut at the Met Gala, the event she's been dreaming of for her whole life. Sadly, her dream is turned into a nightmare when her IBS turns the iconic steps into, well, a hot mess.

Polly-Taylor has built something so silly and niche it’ll primarily appeal to fringe lovers, but that's not a bad thing. It's a testament to a creator who bravely and dedicatedly knows their audience and exactly what to deliver. There's some very clever use of audio and props that adds to the charm, and if only to see a sentient, trumpet-playing toilet, you should check it out.

There's still tickets available for the final performance tonight at the Unicorn & Lion Theatre.
