Pray For Me, written and performed by Sarah Adedeji is a powerful new work-in-progress exploring faith, Deafness and identity, as a Black Deaf woman confronts ideas of cure, belief and belonging through poetry, movement and live music by ISRA3L.
Sarah Adedeji offers a platform for thinking, feeling, and observing with this wonderful work in progress piece. As a non-religious, white, hearing person I will admit I was apprehensive that this show may not be designed for audiences like me, or that I would feel like an intruder in the auditorium. But this could not be further from the truth. Deafness, Christianity, and Blackness are at the centre of this production, but all are welcome to watch. Performed through dance sequences, spoken voiceovers, live music, and creative BSL, there is a way for everyone to engage in this poignant story. Themes like ‘belonging’, ‘belief’, and ‘inclusion’ can be used very vaguely, especially for fringe shows that don’t fit in one particular box, but Pray For Me really does encapsulate these things, and does it well.
Running at 55 minutes, this is the perfect way to fill an evening if you are interested in seeing some new work, and in possibly a new language (but one you will already understand). I would be intrigued to see where this show goes next, and how it will further develop into a finished product.
