The Gruffalo's Child
Rating: ★★★★
Venue: Lyric Theatre, London
Cast: Joe Lindley, Hannah Miller and Sabrina Simohamed
One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warnings about the Big Bad Mouse and tiptoes out into the deep dark wood. She follows snowy tracks and encounters mysterious creatures – but the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?
Let your imagination run wild with songs, laughs and adventure for everyone aged 3 to 103.
Tall Stories do it again, as they reprise their production of Julia Donaldson’s beloved children's book: The Gruffalo's Child.
Their original show ‘The Gruffalo’ turns 25 next year, where it will be running again at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue. So, in advance of booking your tickets for that one, this winter warm-up would serve as a great festive family treat!
A cast of three play an array of characters that many will recognise from their bedtime stories, or car journey audiobooks! Subtle puppeteering, physical theatre, and soundscape voice actors bring all of the woodland creatures to life in an exciting, sensory, yet relaxing way. Isla Shaw’s design choices keep things simple and clear while adding just the right amount of colour and texture to each new scene.
At no time does the music get too loud, but the sound designers have ensured that each line from the actors can be heard across the auditorium (even with the hubbub of children throughout).
A musical play genuinely fun for all ages, without dipping into the world of pantomime as is so common at this time of year, means that aunties, granddad's, and all adults in between can enjoy themselves with their little ones.
