Lila dreams of becoming a Master Firework-Maker just like her father. However, to become one, she must go on an epic journey that will push her to her limits. Only then can she discover the closely guarded secret to becoming a true firework master.
But when her father’s life depends on her winning the firework competition and pulling off the best display the world has ever seen, can Lila’s skills save the day and light up the skies?
In the current theatre sector it can be hard to find family entertainment that is not overstimulating or based solely on mainstream media cartoon characters. The Polka Theatre, both as a producer and venue, offer exactly that.
The space itself is incredibly accessible, all staff are ALWAYS lovely and well informed, and helpful if you ever need assistance. Their shows are perfectly crafted for each intended audience, and Jude Christian’s ‘The Firework Maker's Daughter’ was no different.
With a cast of five who must cover nearly 20 characters between them (including pirates, elephants, kings, and volcanoes), the performers work hard throughout to keep things moving at an engaging pace. Elena Peña supports this with a constant sound scape of animals, environments, and of course, firework displays!
Unfortunately, the bright sky light displays weren't the only things popping during this matinee, as the microphones seemed to bang and buzz for most of the second act - a one off technical hitch I'd assume.
A well balanced mixture of songs (by Ruth Chan), scenes (directed by Lee Lyford), and movement sequences provide regulated excitement for audiences of all ages, meaning that families with older and younger siblings can attend all together and each enjoy every element.
It can be tricky to know if a play based on a book will stay true to the source material, or if you even need to be familiar with it to have fun. The Firework Maker's Daughter was an excellent example of 1) yes it will, but 2) no you don't!
If you're looking for an engaging and relaxing way to spend time with your young people this winter, but don't necessarily fancy anything festive, a visit to the Polka would be perfect!
