Hi Paksie, how are you doing today? Thanks so much for chatting to Stage to Page! Would you mind introducing yourself to our readers and telling us how you first got into the theatre industry?
I had a pretty traditional route into the industry. It all started with an inspirational teacher. Mr Brook, who taught drama at Hillview School. I wasn't the most confident teenager but he really encouraged me to give it a go so I joined a local youth theatre company, then the National Youth Theatre and after a couple of years of auditioning, I went to drama school. That was my route in.
The Wanderers, is coming to the Marylebone Theatre in London this October. Can you tell us about the story?
I think The Wanderers is an exploration of marriage & family. It follows two Jewish couples; a Hasidic couple in 70s Brooklyn & a secular couple in present day Brooklyn. We watch as both couples grapple with the restlessness. It's a beautiful exploration of long term love.
After a successful run in New York, the production is making its London debut. Have there been any changes since the New York run?
This is a totally separate production, so Anna Ziegler's beautiful script remains the same but the production itself is new.
Was there anything in particular that inspired you to be involved with The Wanderers?
I think the themes Anna explores in this piece are universal. Interpersonal dynamics, between marital partners, between parents and children. She's written some beautifully tender moments and its a gift to bring them to life.
My blog is called Stage to Page. But if you could turn any book, from page to stage, what would it be and why?
That's a tough one! I think I'd go for 'In The Dream House' by Carmen Maria Machado. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking memoir written really innovatively. Machado changes form in every chapter - I think that structural playfulness would work really well on stage.
And finally, why should people book tickets to see The Wanderers?
The Wanderers is a soulful exploration of love, marriage & family, I think anyone watching would relate to at least one of the characters.
