The Glamification of Loki
Rating: ★★★★
Venue: Southwark Playhouse Elephant, London
The Glamification of Loki is a wildly entertaining new musical that combines Norse mythology with the dazzling world of beauty, glamour, and cosmic chaos. When the Apples of Youth fall to Earth – landing somewhere unexpected – it’s up to Loki, the shapeshifting God of Mischief, to hunt them down. But Loki’s not out to save the day – they want those apples for themself.
BYMT do it again! This mischievous musical was made possible by an incredible scheme which gets new work on stage - and goodness this one deserved the platform.
The Norse gods are alive and kicking as Loki The Trickster’s latest adventure brings him down to Earth, infiltrating a beauty business on the hunt for… an apple. (It's one of those where you either have to know the story or actually see it to understand, which I would highly recommend)!
With some stellar performances, Eden Treadwell’s writing debut offers a whimsical, hilarious 90 minutes of magic. Even in this early iteration, the stage combat, trickery and illusion, and use of every inch within the auditorium shines a spotlight on just how hard the team worked to get this up on its feet. If that wasn't commendable enough, they did it 4 times in half as many days and still came out smiling at the end!
As most may know their Norse mythology from the Marvel movies, there's a lot of Easter eggs for fans of the films alongside plenty of classic musical theatre tropes to give everyone an enjoyable experience.
Knowing how little time this cast of kids had to rehearse, and the limitations of space and budget etc., there is so much potential for this to grow and be the next cult classic.
