The next interview in our stagey chat series, is with Zachary Pang, who is currently playing Ronnie in STOREHOUSE, a new immersive theatrical event. Zachary has most recently appeared in stage productions of Dear Evan Hansen (Singapore) and Julie: the Musical.
Get yourself comfy and join Zachary and I for a chat about all things stagey!
Hi Zachary, how are you doing today? Thanks so much for chatting to Stage to Page! Would you mind introducing yourself to our readers and telling us how you first got into acting?
Hey! I’m Zachary Pang, and I’m an actor, raised in Singapore, based in London. I got into acting a long time ago now. The first thing I ever did was play the character of Nathan when I was 11, a supporting character in a production of The Full Monty. On our opening night, I was plagued with a high fever and throwing up my dinner, but so was the alternate. I went on anyway, and after my first scene, I ran up to my dad and told him that I was going to be an actor from then on.
From 4th June, you're set to appear in STOREHOUSE, a new immersive theatrical event. Can
you tell us about the story and the role you play?
Storehouse is set in a massive underground facility which creates physical archives of all the data on the
internet. I play one of the Stackers, whose name is Ronnie, and whose job is to care for and arrange all the data, sorting it in a systematic way so that all the information can eventually be collected, and turned into a calculation of ‘ultimate truth’. If you think that’s hard to get your head around, that’s just the first five minutes of the show!
How does it feel to be part of one of the most ambitious and large-scale immersive theatrical
events to ever be staged in the UK?
I’m having a blast! I’ve never done any immersive theatre work before, but it’s been really great to have
multiple skills come into play for a project like this. I get to do more traditional scene work, but there’s also a large element of improv involved when it comes to audience interaction, and having to think on your feet whilst staying true to the given circumstances. It’s a fun challenge.
Late last year you played Jared in the Singapore adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen. How was it
to be part of such an incredible production?
I had such a good laugh on that show. I’m one of the few characters that isn’t sobbing through most of the scenes, so I get a good bit of fun, but there’s still loads of guts to the show and the characters, which struck a nice balance. I also love a good sing, and I got to push the character to more extremes in terms of comedy than I’d normally be given the space for. It was a fantastic time.
My blog is called Stage to Page. But if you could turn any book, from page to stage, what
would it be and why?
I’m currently reading this fantastic book called Project Hail Mary. Not sure if a stage adaptation would work, but I’d love to see it in any other forms! That or maybe The Giving Tree.
And finally, why should people book tickets to STOREHOUSE?
Because it’s a good bit of fun in the heart of London during a glorious summer.
You can book tickets to see STOREHOUSE, here.
