THE EMPIRE STRIPS BACK | REVIEW

The Empire Strips Back
Rating: ★★★★
Venue: Riverside Studios, Studio 2

A burlesque parody show in a galaxy far, far away. Experience a unique blend of seduction and sci-fi as The Empire Strips Back takes you on a journey to the dark side! This tantalizing burlesque experience brings beloved characters to life with loving detail and humor that will leave you laughing and swooning at the same time.

Ever wondered what a sexy Star Wars might look like—perhaps in your teenage dreams? Now you don’t have to imagine it. The Empire Strips Back delivers a sultry, cheeky Star Wars burlesque parody, currently playing at Riverside Studios.

From the moment the lights go down and the iconic main title and opening crawl appear, the set design and dramatic lighting combine to create visuals that vividly evoke the original films. It’s a transportive experience that places you squarely in a galaxy far, far away. While it may take a moment to rewire your brain to accept these legendary characters stripping down to their underwear, once you embrace the absurdity, the fun kicks into high gear.

The performance features all the fan favourites: Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2-D2, C-3PO, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, the Emperor, Stormtroopers—and yes, even Jabba the Hutt. The burlesque acts offer a well-balanced mix of powerful, upbeat dances, slower sensual numbers, strip teases, cheeky pas de deux, playful pas de trois, and energetic group routines—each with its own Star Wars-inspired twist. The talented cast shows off both athleticism and artistic flair, though at times the choreography feels slightly underwhelming compared to the expectations set by other high-end burlesque productions.

The true highlight of the show is the interactive segments hosted by Lando—well, Lando’s nephew—played by the hilarious Travis Jay. With sharp wit and effortless charm, Travis does more than introduce each act. He draws the audience in with clap-alongs, prompts fans to share favourite quotes, tattoos, and characters, and delivers razor-sharp banter with flair. His charisma and humour are the glue that holds the production together—and if you’re in the front row (or attending as a couple), be ready: you may find yourself part of the show.

The soundtrack is a crowd-pleasing blend of classic hits and modern bangers, featuring tracks from Michael Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, Guns N' Roses, and Miley Cyrus. You’ll be bopping in your seat and cheering on the immense talent on stage.

While it cheekily pokes fun at the Star Wars universe, it’s clear the show is created with genuine affection and a deep love for the source material. If you're a Star Wars fan in search of a lighthearted, naughty night out, grab your tickets now—with little resistance, you’ll be pulled to the dark side of the Force.
