The next interview in our stagey chat series is with Georgie Wedge. Per-Verse is Georgie's acclaimed solo show that celebrates the trials, triumphs and self-discovering of romantic connections. The show opens at Riverside Studios from 3rd April and you can book tickets here.
Hi Georgie, how are you doing today? Thanks so much for chatting to Stage to Page! Would you mind introducing yourself to our readers and telling us how you first got into the theatre industry?
Hey there, I’m doing great thank you! I’m a writer and performer based in London, who works in film and TV production by day. I loved acting from a young age and performed throughout school and university. I got into the marketing side of entertainment after graduating, but whilst completing a part-time Masters in Writing for Performance a few years later, I began experimenting with my own writing which simultaneously reinvigorated my passion for performing. After switching into production and testing performance poetry pieces at events in London, I took the leap of developing my own solo show.
Your debut show, Per-Verse, which you've written and perform is set to open at Riverside Studios next month. Can you tell us more about the one-woman piece?
Per-Verse is a riotous slice of modern city dating told through a blend of poetry, storytelling and physical comedy. Whilst navigating a “typical” date night, I immerse the audience in some colourful flashbacks of “ghosts of dating past” as I move through the different phases and locations. It’s a raw, interactive and flirty theatrical experience of my real-life dates, per verse.
The show returns to the stage after a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe last year. Have you made any changes to the show?
I have indeed! The structure of the show has changed slightly and I’ve added some new material, drawing on both dates that reach further back over the years to ones I’ve had since Edinburgh Fringe. There’s also fun new soundscapes and voiceovers, which ramp up the sensory feel of the show.
What inspired you to write a show that intertwines poetry, storytelling and physical comedy? And did you always have yourself in mind to perform the show when writing the piece?
The show began from stand-alone poetry pieces about my dating life that I performed at events in London – which themselves originated as tipsy notes on my phone and voice notes to friends. I started to identify certain themes that linked the poems and with the chaotic, changeable nature of dating I thought a dynamic, interactive blend of forms would lend itself well. With writing becoming a bit of an avenue to get back into performing again, I always had myself in mind – though it can be slightly strange at times playing a more exaggerated version of myself. I also wouldn’t want to put someone else through re-enacting at times harrowingly cringe true events!
My blog is called Stage to Page. But if you could turn any book, from page to stage, what would it be and why?
Ooh, that’s a tough one. My close friend, Hannah Beer, has actually just published her debut novel, I Make My Own Fun which is a deliciously dark ride through a story of fame and obsession. It would be a super fun journey on the stage.
And finally, why should people book tickets to Per-Verse?
It’s truly something completely different and I’d bet not the kind of dating themed show you’d expect. It’s a chance to be a fly on the wall of a date like no other, whilst also feeling like you’re gossiping with your friend the whole way through. There’s a lot of layers to the show; it’s bold and outrageous at times, yet also warm and relatable. I may even venture as far to say I could be the best date you ever had?
Per-Verse is at the Riverside Studios in London from 3rd - 19th April 2025. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
